Topic title

List down different maladjusted behaviours of adolescents which you could identify from the classroom and outside classroom. Take interview of a few and try to understand the factors that may be responsible for their behaviour.

 Introduction

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage marked by various psychological, emotional, and social changes. Some adolescents exhibit maladjusted behaviors that impact their academic performance, relationships, and overall well-being. This practicum aims to identify and understand these behaviors observed both within the classroom and beyond, and investigate potential factors contributing to these behaviors through interviews with affected adolescents.

Abstract

This practicum aims to identify maladjusted behaviors exhibited by adolescents within and outside the classroom and understand the contributing factors behind such behaviors through interviews. By assessing these behaviors and their underlying causes, the objective is to provide insights for more effective support mechanisms for adolescents facing challenges.

Aim and Objectives

The aim is to explore maladjusted behaviors among adolescents and comprehend the factors influencing these behaviors. The objectives include:

  • Identifying specific maladjusted behaviors observed within and outside the classroom.
  • Understanding the factors contributing to these behaviors through interviews with affected adolescents.
  • Analyzing the collected data to recognize patterns and potential underlying causes.

Methodology

1. Selection of Participants: A diverse group of adolescents (approximately 15-20) will be chosen from varied backgrounds and exhibiting different maladjusted behaviors. These adolescents will be selected from schools, community centers, or youth groups, ensuring a mix of behaviors and experiences.

Data Collection

Observational Analysis: The researchers will conduct in-classroom observations to identify observable maladjusted behaviors among selected students.

Semi-Structured Interviews: Individual interviews with the selected adolescents will be conducted. The interview questions will focus on understanding their behaviors, experiences, and potential contributing factors.

 Data Analysis

Qualitative Analysis: Thematic analysis will be employed to identify patterns and themes in the interview responses. Common factors contributing to maladjusted behaviors will be identified.

Quantitative Data (if applicable): If applicable, quantitative data regarding academic performance, attendance records, or behavioral incidents will be analyzed to complement qualitative findings.

Ethical Considerations: Confidentiality and informed consent will be ensured. Ethical guidelines regarding adolescent participants will be strictly adhered to.

Data Collection and Analysis

The observational data collected from classroom settings will provide insight into behaviors such as disruptive conduct, disengagement, or attention issues. The interviews will offer qualitative data on personal experiences, stressors, and perceived reasons behind their behaviors. Thematic analysis of interview responses will reveal common threads or influencing factors contributing to maladjusted behaviors among adolescents.

Identifying Maladjusted Behaviors

1) In the Classroom:

Disruptive behavior: Interrupting, talking out of turn, being consistently defiant or oppositional towards the teacher or peers.

Academic disengagement: Lack of interest in studies, poor participation, frequent absenteeism, or declining academic performance.

Aggressive conduct: Physical or verbal aggression towards peers or teachers, bullying, or engaging in fights.

Inattentiveness and restlessness: Inability to focus, constant fidgeting, or being easily distracted.

Withdrawn or isolative behavior: Preferring solitude, avoiding social interactions, or showing signs of social anxiety.

2)Outside the Classroom:

Substance abuse: Experimentation or regular use of drugs, alcohol, or other substances.

Delinquent behavior: Engaging in criminal activities, vandalism, theft, or other illegal actions.

Risky behaviors: Reckless driving, unsafe sexual activities, or engaging in dangerous stunts.

Emotional volatility: Frequent mood swings, expressions of extreme sadness, anger, or erratic emotional responses.

Disengagement from family: Avoidance of family interactions, conflict with family members, or running away from home.

Conducting Interviews

Select a diverse group of adolescents exhibiting different maladjusted behaviors observed in and out of the classroom. Use a semi-structured interview approach, ensuring confidentiality and sensitivity in discussing their behaviors and underlying factors. The interviews may include questions such as:

What factors do you think contribute to your behavior in the classroom/outside the classroom?

Have you experienced any specific challenges or stressors in your life that you believe influence your behavior?

Do you feel understood and supported by adults, including teachers or family members?

How do you perceive your relationship with peers and friends?

Have you ever sought help or support for managing your behavior, and if not, what barriers do you face?

Conclusion

This practicum aims to shed light on the multifaceted nature of maladjusted behaviors in adolescents, both in and out of the classroom. By understanding the underlying factors contributing to these behaviors, the findings can guide the development of more effective interventions, support systems, and policies to assist adolescents in coping with their challenges and fostering a conducive environment for their well-being and academic success.
